FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.—No Contest: Overcoming a Competitive Spirit by GARBC National Representative Mike Hess is available for preorder. It will be released at the start of the 2020 GARBC Conference on June 29.
A competitive spirit.
Athletes have it. Siblings feel it. Even vocational ministry personnel and pastors today can have it. We admire it in athletes, students, and businesses. But it isn’t always admirable, and a sense of competition definitely doesn’t belong in the church of Jesus Christ.
Mike Hess candidly admits to struggling with unhealthy competition. “You would think that the childish jealousy of competing with what others have would diminish when we reach adulthood,” he says. “But my experience is that it worsens the older we get. The temptation to compare ourselves to and compete with others is more prevalent than ever.”
So how do Christians overcome this need to compete in unhealthy ways?
Mike found the Biblical solution for his unhealthy feelings of competition. In No Contest he takes readers on a journey through the Bible to uncover
- where the need to compete comes from,
- how God views it,
- what should replace it,
- who has it, and
- the believer’s hope for conquering it when it’s aimed at others that should be loved and served instead.
It’s time to end competition within the Body of Jesus Christ! Applying the Scriptural commands and principles Mike presents will help readers conquer unhealthy competition so that individuals, Christian ministries, and churches alike can say, “There’s no contest here. Through God’s Spirit, love, power, and Word, we’re overcoming a competitive spirit.”
Mike Hess received a bachelor’s degree from Clarks Summit University and a master’s degree from Baptist Bible Seminary, Clarks Summit, Pa. He is now pursuing a doctor of ministry degree. He is also a certified Biblical counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. Prior to his role as national representative of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Mike served as a senior pastor in churches in Illinois and Iowa.
